  • Wood filler
  • Sandpaper (medium and fine grit)

Step 1: Assess and Plan

Before starting, decide on the design and measurements. In this project:

  • Height: The board and batten paneling was installed to a height that balanced the space with the existing wall art.
  • Spacing: The vertical battens were spaced evenly for a cohesive look. Take into account outlets and other wall features.

Pro Tip: Use a level to ensure your measurements are accurate.

Step 2: Install the Horizontal Board

Cut a horizontal board to fit the width of the wall. Secure it:

  1. Apply construction adhesive to the back.
  2. Attach it to the wall using a level for alignment.
  3. Reinforce with finishing nails or a brad nailer.

Step 3: Add Vertical Battens

  1. Cut your battens to the desired height between the baseboard and the horizontal board.
  2. Space them evenly along the wall. Measure carefully and mark their positions.
  3. Attach each batten with construction adhesive and secure with nails.

Tip: Use painter’s tape to hold battens temporarily in place while nailing.

Step 4: Fill and Smooth

  1. Fill gaps and nail holes with wood filler.
  2. Caulk all edges where the boards meet the wall for a seamless look.
  3. Once dry, sand down any rough edges and excess filler.

Step 5: Paint

  1. Start with a coat of primer to ensure smooth coverage.
  2. Apply two coats of your chosen paint color with a brush and roller. In this case, a moody green-grey paint added elegance to the space.

Pro Tip: Use painter’s tape to protect the surrounding wall and trim.

Step 6: Final Touches

Once the paint is dry, step back and admire your work! The finished board and batten wall adds depth and character, making it a perfect accent for any room.
